Referee/Skating Officials (SO)

What are the benefits of being a Referee?

  • If you want to be part of a community that supports girls, women and queer skaters in competitive sports, being a Skating Official is for you.
  • Referees, a.k.a. Skating Officials (SO), are essential for ensuring safety and fair play during games. Skating Officials wear roller skates during practice and games. They fill multiple positions in a game or scrimmage.
  • You get to roller skate! Skating Officials can be any gender and are members of Arizona Roller Derby.
  • Learn about derby. There’s no better way to learn the rules of roller derby than to be a part of the officials crew.
  • No experience needed. Skating Officials have their own practice time dedicated to ref skills and skating skills, and are trained in skating skills before they participate in officiating.
  • Being a part of world-class derby. Skating Officials practice and train every Tuesday and Sunday, during Arizona Roller Derby practices and scrimmages.
  • You’re part of the action when home teams and travel team practice and scrimmage each other as well as when we host other teams for regulation or sanctioned games.

A few examples of the positions that SOs run during a game:

  • Head Referee: Supervises the officiating.
  • Jammer Referee: Watches each jammer exclusively and counts the points each jammer achieves.
  • Inside Pack Referee: Watches the main pack of blockers and pivots from the inside of the track.
  • Outside Pack Referee: Watches the main pack of blockers and pivots from the outside of the track.

***Skating officials must have skates, and the appropriate safety gear. (knee pads, elbow pads, helmet, and wrist guards).
