Juniors Roller Derby
AZRD is proud to offer a Junior League ages 8 – 17. No experience is required to join. Our coaches work with each skater to help them learn and refine their skating skills. Junior roller derby is a an alternative to the standard sports available to kids. It also provides a non-traditional, supportive community for your child. When your child joins AZRD’s Junior League they will have an opportunity to develop teamwork, strengthen leadership skills, build self confidence, and improve overall fitness and social skills. Our junior league participates in the JRDA program and rule set.
We have 3 tiers of skater participation, skaters progress through the tiers over time as their skills progress.
TIER 1 – LEARN TO SKATE
Learn core skating skills and have fun learning to skate! (Level 1)
TIER 2 – LEARN & PLAY ROLLER DERBY
For skaters who have the core skating skills who are ready to learn roller derby or are returning to roller derby. Skills and drills are designed to engage skaters to play roller derby on our home teams. Skaters will play at the contact level appropriate for the skills of the skaters on the track. (Level 2 & 3)
TIER 3 – ADVANCED ROLLER DERBY
Full contact roller derby. Focused on a higher level competitive play. Our advanced roller derby group plays full contact and not only plays on home teams but are eligible to participate on our travel team. * Skaters selected for the travel team will be required to attend additional practices.* (Level 3+)
SKILL ADVANCEMENT & CONTACT LEVELS
Participants are assessed by their coaches on their skill level and contact readiness according the JRDA standards. Skaters advance when they pass each skill level assessment. There are two levels of contact in JRDA derby. We have opportunities for both of these contact levels to play in bouts.
- Reduced Contact – Skaters under 12 participate in positional blocking, and driving, no hits allowed.
- Full Contact – Skaters over 12 (or those with an additional parent waiver) can participate in full contact advanced roller derby.
